CHYNA

It took Simone and Karrine like forever to get back from Honey’s crib, and I had started to get worried. I paced the floor in the kitchen, but stopped when I saw Mama standing in the doorway. A silk scarf was tied around her head and she used Kleenex to wipe her running nose.

“What’s got you so uptight?” she asked.

“Nothin’. Just thinkin’ about somethin’ that happened yesterday.”

Mama opened the fridge and removed a container of orange juice. She poured some in a glass then asked if I wanted some.

“No, but thank you.”

I was short with Mama because I didn’t appreciate how she handled herself yesterday. It wasn’t like she hadn’t put her hands on us before, but it was how she went about that shit that made me feel the way I did.

“Are you still sick?” I asked.

“Yeah, this cold got me on my ass. I don’t feel like doing anything, and I’m trying to get well before we go to Vegas.”

I was looking forward to our Vegas trip too. Going there always meant money, and there was a lot of it to be made there.

After Mama finished her orange juice, she put her glass in the sink. She started to leave the kitchen, but I called out to her.

“Is everything good with you,” I asked. “You’ve been actin’ kind of strange lately, and I also wanted to talk to you about those rules you laid on us the other day. You pretty much know that ain’t gon’ work, Mama, and all stuff like that gon’ do is have us at each other’s throats. You know that, don’t you?”

“We’re already at each other’s throats. Open your eyes, Chyna, and stop walking around like a blind woman who can’t see shit. I’m going back into my room to get some rest. Please don’t interrupt me, and I don’t give a care what you and your sisters do tonight. We’ll discuss those rules sooner, rather than later, so don’t think I’ve forgotten about them.”

Mama walked off, but I didn’t understand what she was trying to say. Was she implying that we were at war with each other? I wasn’t feeling that at all, and all I saw was a few disagreements amongst all of us that could always be worked out.

“Mama, you didn’t answer me?” I said loud enough for her to hear. She was almost near the steps and on her way upstairs. “I asked if you were all right, because this new attitude of yours ain’t cool. If I’ve said or done somethin’ to you, I want you to tell me. There is no doubt that we fucked up with Honey, but all I can do is apologize for it. I’m sorry and it was a big mistake that won’t happen again.”

Mama sneezed and wiped her nose again. She came up to me and cracked a tiny smile that seemed forced.

“That’s what you said the last time, Chyna. You said it was a mistake when y’all stabbed that bitch in the back in St.
